COP26 and the role of solar power in combatting climate change

COP26 is the 2021 United Nations climate change conference: for nearly three decades the UN has been bringing together almost every country on earth for global climate summits – called COPs – which stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’. In that time climate change has gone from being a fringe issue to a global priority.

This year is the 26th annual summit – giving it the name COP26. With the UK as President, COP26 is taking place in Glasgow this month.

Encouraging investment in renewables is one of the key elements of the COP goal to secure global net zero by mid-century and limit the rise in global warming to 1.5 degrees – with the aim of preventing as much of the devastating effects of climate change as possible.

And while the conference is looking for countries to make national commitments – there is also something we can do as individuals: by looking for ways to help the environment such as by installing solar panels in our homes.

It’s not just about doing the ‘right thing’, it can also make financial sense as the investment in installing equipment to generate and store your own electricity to use at home can be cost-effective over a relatively short period of time.

At SCA Solar, our calculations show that on a typical south-facing three bedroomed property, these costs can be recouped within around seven years – and that’s at today’s electricity prices.

Give us the details about your electricity bills and the appliances you use – and a bit of background about your property – and we’ll be able to tell you if one of our solar energy systems would be appropriate for you.

They are a combination of the solar panels which generate electricity on a sunny day (which you can use, free of charge) and batteries which mean you can store the excess if you generate more than you can actually use at the time – and call on it when you need it.
